Camping With Medeski Martin & Wood

As the holiday season gets closer, some may have visions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads but Medeski Martin & Wood are already dreaming about next summer’s fourth annual Camp MMW.

The camp takes place July 31-Aug. 5, 2011 in the Catskill Mountains at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, N.Y.

Camp MMW offers musicians of various levels the chance to study with keyboard/organ/piano player John Medeski, drummer/percussionist Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood.

The camp features “intensive workshops and seminars, deep listening, musical exploration, and improvisation.” Look out for special guests, group collaborations and exclusive performances by MMW.

Nightly evening events include performances, jam sessions, films, discussions, bonfires and maybe even a dance party.

Space is limited to 80 campers age 16 years and up. All instruments are welcome.

Along with their application, campers are required to submit two samples of music in MP3 format with at least one music sample played solo without accompaniment. Original music is preferred.

Along with four full days of lessons and evening events, the camp also includes organic, gourmet meals.

Camp tuition and meals along with 5 nights of shared accommodations at Full Moon Resort will set you back $2,000.

If campers want to rough it outdoors and forgo the resort for camping, you’ll only have to fork over $1,100. Campers must provider their own tent and sleeping bag.

Applications are being accepted now through June 6, 2011. Discounts are available the earlier campers apply.
