Beatles On iTunes: Is this A Big Deal?

After years of rumors, gossip and second-guessing Steve Jobs, The Beatles catalog is now available on iTunes. But is the Fab Four’s entry to the digital downloading biz a major news event? Or is it merely a case of catching up with the world?

To be sure, Apple is giving you more than just downloads of classic tunes like “A Day In The Life,” “Help” and “Hey Jude.” There’s additional content to be had, like the special digital Beatles Box Set featuring the “Live At The Washington Coliseum, 1964” film depicting the Fab Four’s first U.S. concert.

But is there anyone left in the world who wants to own a Beatles album, but so far hasn’t been able to acquire, say, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Revolver or Rubber Soul? Or is today’s announcement from Apple more about digital music history than delivering the lads to a new audience, as one more piece of the music downloading puzzle falls into place.

Even the diehard Beatles fans here at Pollstar HQ aren’t all that excited about today’s announcement. But what about you? Is The Beatles on iTunes a big deal?
