Sympathy For The Pony

The Rolling Stones’ tongue and lip logo can be found on just about everything from shot glasses to underwear to shoelaces. A German court has ruled that one place you won’t find the infamous image is on a pony’s hindquarters.

The pony’s owner had already started the inking process before the ruling by shaving off a patch of hair on its hindquarters and pre-tattooing the pattern.

A court in Muenster ruled that going through with the tattoo would violate animal protection laws, which “specifically prohibit tattooing warm-blooded vertebrates,” according to Reuters.

The owner defended his intentions by saying he wanted to make his pony “more unique and beautiful.”

This was not a good excuse in the eyes of the court, which noted in a statement that inflicting pain on animals without reasonable cause is against the law. In addition, the court said the tattoo was going to be used to further the owner’s economic interests rather than being used as an identification mark.

According to Reuters, the owner had filed a business registration that gave the impression he wanted to start a tattoo service for animals.
