Marr currently plays guitar with English indie rock band The Cribs and was a founding member and guitarist with The Smiths, which broke up in 1987. He’s also lent his skills to Modest Mouse and The The.

“David Cameron, stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don’t,” Marr tweeted Dec. 1. “I forbid you to like it.”

Cameron expressed his love of the British alternative band in 2006 when he chose “This Charming Man” as his selection for BBC Radio 4’s “Desert Island Discs” show, according to Spinner.com.  The track, which was written by Marr and singer Morrissey, was released as The Smiths’ second single in 1983.

If Marr wants Cameron to apologize for ruining The Smiths’ reputation, the Prime Minister already did that in 2009.

“I’m sure when Morrissey finds that he’s getting an endorsement from the leader of the Conservative Party, he will think ‘Heaven knows I’m miserable now’. But I’m a big fan, I’m afraid. Sorry about that,” Cameron said in a clip that was aired during an episode of the BBC’s The One Show, according to the Telegraph.

Morrissey was a guest on the show at the time. His response?

“It’s difficult to make comment because you might hurt people’s feelings.”

Earlier today Marr took to his Twitter account once again to write, “I see the recession has affected some people’s sense of humour. Lighten up Boris.” Could this be a reference to Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London?
