Celebrate Girl Talk With Gregg Gillis Day
Earlier today Gillis tweeted “Gregg gillis day like whoa” with a link to a photo of a resolution sponsored by City Councilman William Peduto (via Pitchfork.com).
“Gregg has become an international sensation selling out performances around the world,” Peduto said in a statement, according to Pittsburgh’s WPXI. “I am honored to recognize all of the accomplishments of one of our native sons.”
Girl Talk’s fifth album, All Day, was released as a free download last month. The 12-track album features 373 samples over a course of 71 minutes. The first track, “Oh No,” features over a dozen samples including Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” Ludacris’ “Move Bitch,” Jane’s Addiction’s “Jane Says,” Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop” and Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On.”
The resolution makes note of the free download, adding that the city council recognizes “the innovative and creative talents of Gregg Gillis and thanks him for continuing to make his home in Pittsburgh.”
Gillis said having his own holiday was an honor.
“This is definitely beyond anything I thought would happen associated with my musical career and I appreciate the recognition,” he said, according to WPXI.
After playing two sold out shows at Pittsburgh’s new Stage AE club Dec. 3-4, Girl Talk closes out 2010 with a New Year’s Eve show at The Rave Eagles Club in Milwaukee.
Girl Talk’s 2011 tour plans begin Jan. 5 with a show at Cleveland’s House Of Blues. Dates are on the books through late March.
