The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne Talks New Music

The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne recently revealed the band will start working on new music early next year.

In interview with Rolling Stone Coyne said the band will once again work with longtime producer Dave Fridmann. Rather than waiting to put out a traditional album, The Lips hope to release new tunes every month.

“We’ll start in late January, though I’m not sure if we’ll get together exactly by then,” Coyne told Rolling Stone.

“With this new thing, we’re going to spend a lot of time recording at our houses or wherever we are at. We’ll try to release a song a month and document the song in the making, whether it takes us three or five days or a week. …We just want to [release material] some other way.”

Coyne added that the band is still figuring out its strategy for releasing the music, explaining that possible formats include “vinyl, cereal boxes or some of it on toys that we make.”

The Flaming Lips will celebrate New Year’s Eve by playing the band’s 1999 album The Soft Bulletin in its entirety at Oklahoma City’s Cox Business Services Convention Center.

In 2009 the band released Embryonic in addition to The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing The Dark Side of the Moon, a remake of Pink Floyd’s 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon.
