Piggy Dolls Rocking The Boat

Two new Korean girl groups are sparking some controversy.

The Piggy Dolls recently debuted with the single “Trend,” but the song itself has invited less attention than the group’s appearance.

The three members weigh a total of 441 pounds, and though the single sends a message of self-confidence (“What’s wrong with my body? You know my face, my personality”) in terms of the three singers’ body image, some people are expressing dismay over the way the group is being marketed. In particular, the name seems to be a problem.

Then, on Jan. 12, Girl Story debuted. The average age of the four members is 10. In the midst of industry-wide charges of exploitation of teenage girl groups and the sexual suggestiveness they sell, there’s a feeling that in the case of Girl Story the production company has gone too far. But maybe that’s the point.
