Mexican Prosecutors Appeal Singer’s Release
A prosecutor has reversed course and appealed a judge’s decision to dismiss rape charges against Mexican pop singer Kalimba in a roller-coaster case that has captivated Mexico.
Prosecutor Francisco Alor initially had said an appeal would be pointless. He still says reversing last week’s ruling to free singer Kalimba will be difficult.

Kalimba was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl on Dec. 19 at a hotel. He has denied the accusation.
Alor said Monday the appeal was “based on the overriding interests of the minor, international treaties on protecting minors and in view of the opinions of the human rights commission.”
The National Human Rights Commission is investigating whether law-enforcement officials and prosecutors correctly handled the case.
