Famous Roadie Joseph Campbell Dies

Joseph Campbell, a 30-year roadie for The Allman Brothers Band known as “Red Dog,” died Feb. 21 after a battle with cancer. He was 68.

Campbell, who wrote a book about his roadie career called “The Legendary Red Dog: a Book of Tails,” was memorialized in Cameron Crowe’s movie “Almost Famous,” with “Red Dog” played by Zack Ward.

He also appears on the back cover of The Allman Brothers’ At Fillmore East.

Campbell met the band after returning from Vietnam and helped support the fledgling group with his pension checks. A memorial is planned for Cox Theatre in Macon, Ga., April 22. Campbell requested donations on his behalf be sent to Hospice of Central Georgia in Macon.
