SF Markets Mid-Market

The mid-Market Street section of San Francisco, home of the historic Warfield Theatre, has none of the glass-and-steel gleam of the portion of the famed street going through the Financial District toward the Ferry Building.

But that could change with efforts to move in some new high-profile tenants, starting with the Burning Man arts festival organization, Twitter and the American Conservatory Theatre all considering leasing space in and around the Warfield Building.

A tax proposal announced Feb. 7 by San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee and two city supervisors could sweeten any deal and renew hope for the neighborhood, with a six-year payroll tax exemption for companies with payrolls north of $250,000 that relocate to the area.

“Keeping companies like Twitter helps us create jobs, boost our local economy and, in this case, can be a catalyst to transform our central Market Street area,” Lee said of the plan.
