Apparently the 52-year-old Di’Anno, whose real name is Paul Andrews, claimed to have suffered nerve damage after jumping off a stage in 1998 and began receiving disability benefits in 2002.

But Di’Anno never gave up singing and continued rocking out long after that first disability check arrived. YouTube videos show the frontman in action at shows taking place as early as 2004.

Now the rocker has been sentenced to nine months in jail for bilking the Department of Work and Pensions out of £45,479 ($73,610) in benefits. Di’Anno’s fakery was discovered when DWP investigators found a YouTube video depicting him jumping around onstage during a 2006 show, according to London’s Daily Mail newspaper. Investigators eventually unearthed 50 videos depicting Di’Anno moving around on stage as if he’s in perfect health and not the pain-ridden nerve-damaged sufferer warranting government assistance.

Di’Anno, who fronted Iron Maiden from 1978 to 1981, copped to eight counts of benefit fraud during a Salisbury Crown Court appearance Feb. 11. He is expected to serve at least four and a half months of his nine-month sentence before he can be released on conditional bail.
