A statement on the indie rock band’s website notes that Smith was diagnosed following the completion of the group’s fourth studio album, Nine Types of Light.

Smith will miss out on the upcoming tour while he continues undergoing treatment.

“Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care,” TV On The Radio wrote in the statement. “Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard’s legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family.”

In fall 2009 the group announced it was taking a yearlong hiatus from touring. The South by Southwest gigs will mark the band’s first shows since its August 2009 set at Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival.

The Austin, Texas festival will feature TV On The Radio Thursday and Friday at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q/ Waller Creek Amph., and Saturday at The Mohawk.

U.S. and Canadian dates are booked through a May 2 show at San Diego’s 4th And B.

The band will also play Philadelphia (April 8), Baltimore (April 10), New York (April 13), Boston (April 16), Toronto (April 18), Detroit (April 20), Minneapolis (April 23-24) and Denver (April 26).

European dates are scheduled June 23-July 9. Following the trek the group plays Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago July 17.
