Speculating On Sheen
The former “Two And A Half Men” star announced his tour March 10 after dominating news cycles for weeks, with every word he uttered, every tweet he tweeted and every machete he waved on the roof of Live Nation’s offices getting “major news” treatment.
Two initial dates were reported to have sold out immediately and more dates were added shortly after to meet the country’s voracious appetite for Sheen.
But a recent report from CNBC’s Jane Wells questioned whether Sheen was winning over fans as much as he was winning over scalpers.
With just a week until showtime, tickets were still available on Ticketmaster for Sheen’s opening night at Fox Theatre in Detroit. And if a buyer was willing to check secondary sites, Wells said she found tickets for less than face value.
“I found main floor tickets that cost around $52 on Ticketmaster (plus fees) for $35 on Stubhub,” she wrote. “They’re going for $33 on Nofeestickets.com. And on Bargainseatsonline.com, they’re even cheaper … $27.”
An examination of Stubhub showed more than 400 tickets – many on the main floor and starting at $20 – were still available for the 5,000-capacity Fox Theatre. The subsequent night at the 3,604-capacity Chicago Theatre showed more than 700 tickets for sale on the site starting at $35.
“Talk about a violent torpedo of truth,” Wells wrote. “These sellers are bleeding tiger blood on their investment. If Charlie Sheen was a futures market, it might be time to short.”
