Weird Al’s Lady Gaga Parody Good To Go
Yesterday “Weird Al” took to his personal blog to give fans the low-down on the trouble he had gone through regarding the parody.
The wacky satirical singer-songwriter had hoped to include the Gaga parody, called “Perform This Way,” as the first single on his new album. He explained that he had already written, recorded, mixed and mastered 11 of the 12 songs on the album and was just waiting to nail down the last song before setting an official release date.
Before writing the lyrics of “Perform This Way” Al pitched the idea to Lady Gaga’s manager. He was told that Gaga needed to hear the song before giving it her OK.
Al said he worked “day and night” on the lyrics while in the middle of his Australian tour. A few days after sending the lyrics to Gaga, Al was told that the pop star “actually needs to hear it. Otherwise the answer is no.”
And so he cut his family vacation short to hit the studio and work “around the clock” on the parody. After all of that, “Weird Al” was told that Gaga did not approve of the tune.
In his post, titled “Gaga Saga,” Al explained that legally he could record and release the parody under “fair use,” but that it’s always been his personal policy to get the consent of the artist.
“Of course I will respect Gaga’s wishes,” Al wrote. “However, given the circumstances, I have no problem with allowing people to hear it online, because I also have a personal policy not to completely waste my stinking time.”
“Weird Al” posted the parody on YouTube yesterday, with a declaimer saying that the tune “was supposed to be the first single from my upcoming album … Unfortunately, it did not receive Lady Gaga’s approval.”
Later that day “Weird Al” heard back from Lady Gaga’s manager, who admitted that he had never forwarded the parody to the singer.
“Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what we were TOLD), he apparently made the decision completely on his own,” Al wrote. “He’s sorry. And Gaga loves the song.”
Al added that he was thrilled that the song could be included on his new album – and to know that Gaga has a sense of humor.
A music video for the parody is in the works, which “Weird Al” promises will be “BEYOND AWESOME, and disturbing on many levels.”
Album release information will be announced soon. All proceeds from the parody (and the parody’s future music video) are being donated to the Human Rights Campaign.
