Pearl Jam Hailed As Planet Defenders

Rock The Earth, whose slogan is “defending the planet one beat at a time,” also recognized Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as a 2011 Planet Defender in the community leader category, and documentary director/founder of International WOW Company Josh Fox for his work as a grassroots activist.

Pearl Jam snagged its win in the artist category for not only setting “the bar high in the world of rock music, but also in their dedication to environmental activism” during the group’s 20-year-career. A statement posted on Rock The Earth’s website on Friday points out that the band set up a “Carbon Portfolio Strategy” to offset the group’s environmental impact.

“Through this Strategy, the band has donated more than $150,000 to nine organizations doing innovative work around climate change, renewable energy, and the environment. By working with these organizations to mitigate carbon emissions, Pearl Jam ultimately hopes to become 0% net emissions for all tours and band businesses.”

Last year Pearl Jam donated $210,000 to plant trees in Puget Sound, Wash., to offset carbon emissions from their 2009 Backspacer Tour.

Rock The Earth’s statement also noted that singer Eddie Vedder and guitarist Stone Gossard have both individually contributed to environmental causes including
Vedder’s involvement with the Surfrider Foundation and Gossard’s work with groups including the Wild Salmon Center and Conservation International.

Last year’s list of Planet Defenders included Bonnie Raitt.

Although Pearl Jam doesn’t have any upcoming dates on the books, fans can catch Vedder on tour June 15 through July 16.
