What kind of fame and glory? The winning entry will appear in a Cake video. That doesn’t happen every day.

Here’s the skinny. Participating schools can send in videos showing their own marching bands strutting their stuff to Cake’s “Federal Funding” which appears on the band’s latest album, Showroom Of Compassion. Although the winning band will be selected for their creativity as well as for the quality of the performance, contestants will have some guidance in the form of a marching band arrangement and charts for the song provided by Cake. The final result will be dubbed “The Federal Funding March.”

“With all the brass, the album track for ‘Federal Funding’ already sounded like it was a great arrangement for a marching band,” Cake trumpeter Vincent DiFiore said in a statement announcing the contest. “It has strong syncopation and a bouncy bottom-end. For ‘The Federal Funding March,’ the electric guitar, electric bass and drum kit were omitted. In their place are saxophones, low brass, flutes and tenor drums. It is our hope that band directors everywhere will find this arrangement appealing for its rhythmic groove, melodic sensibility and thematic timeliness.”

While prizes are still being determined, the winning band will appear in a video for “The Federal Funding March” to be shot at the band’s school. More details will be announced soon. Meanwhile, click here for the US Scholastic Band Association’s website and here for Cake’s home on the Internet.
