Legal Stink Over MJ Perfume
A Las Vegas perfumer reportedly working with Joe Jackson on a Michael Jackson-branded fragrance line is being sued for illegally exploiting the late singer’s name.
The lawsuit, filed in Las Angeles federal court June 9 by Bravado, Universal Music Group’s merchandising division, is seeking $150,000 in statutory damages, as well as punitive damages.
Julian Rouas Paris and Joe Jackson reportedly contracted to launch the J.R.P. Jackson Parfum, which features men’s fragrance “Jackson Tribute” and women’s fragrance “Jackson Legend.” A portion of the proceeds are to be donated to Michael Jackson’s favorite charities, according to a press release.
However, Bravado’s lawsuit claims that Rouas’s company didn’t get permission from anyone acting on behalf of MJ’s estate and must cease using the name and image. Joe Jackson reportedly isn’t named as a defendant.
