Not only will the Carl Palmer Band’s upcoming “Pictures At An Exhibition Tour” feature Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s instrumental heritage, but the group will also perform the Muggorsky classic that helped launch the trio in the early ‘70s.

Recorded at Newcastle City Hall in late 1970, ELP’s Pictures At An Exhibition helped position the band as progressive rock heavyweights as well as prove the trio was just as excellent live on stage as it was in the studio.

But don’t expect someone aping Keith Emerson’s keyboard wizardry on the tour. Palmer’s reinterpretations of his ELP days are more about guitars, drums and bass than teasing sounds out of Moogs.

“Since the early part of this decade I have been playing with my own power trio, replacing the keyboards with guitars,” Palmer said in a statement. “I felt that was the only honest way to approach the music of ELP. I didn’t want to have a singer trying to sound like Greg Lake. ELP did so much instrumental music, this format made sense to me. Hearing the keyboard parts done on guitar is certainly different, but just as satisfying. The idea was to re-invent this iconic music.”

The “re-inventing” begins in Rochester, N.Y., at the Water Street Music Hall Oct. 10. Other stops include Bay Shore, N.Y., at the YMCA Boulton Center For The Performing Arts Oct. 13; Bethlehem, Pa., at Musikfest Café at ArtsQuest Center Oct. 16; NYC at B.B. King Blues Club Oct. 18; Detroit’s Jazz Café Oct. 24 and Chicago at Reggie’s Live Oct. 26.

Palmer has more than one pan in the fire on this tour. The drummer will be promoting his new iTunes mobile app, “Play Carl Palmer’s Drums.” Developed by Dynamic Websites, the application for iPods, iPads and iPhones gives you a virtual version of Palmer’s own kit, enabling your fingers to drum like the master.

Palmer is also the subject of the art film “The Solo” which depicts drum solos as works of art. For it’s U.S. premiere, “The Solo” will be shown at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame as part of its Legends Series. Appearing as a special guest, Palmer will partake in a Q&A with the audience after the film’s presentation.

Along with serving up a generous helping of ELP instrumentals, Palmer promises to meet with fans after every show. Visit CarlPalmer.com for more information.
