In a video announcing the news, Smith explains that he has bills to pay and must get back to his day job. While he’s busy touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kenny Aronoff will handle the sticks for the Foot. Aronoff has worked with just about everyone in the music industry including John Mellencamp, Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Seger, John Fogerty, Melissa Etheridge, Jon Bon Jovi, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Alanis Morissette and The Rolling Stones.

Smith promises that his absence is not permanent, that it’s “just for a little bit.” Red Hot Chili Peppers have dates scheduled Sept. 2 through Dec. 17 in South America and Europe.

In the meantime Aronoff says he’s “going to do a kick-ass job” for the band. The rock supergroup also features former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony along with guitarist Joe Satriani.

Chickenfoot tour dates are in the works in support of the band’s upcoming album, which is set for release Sept. 27. The band is also planning to host a live worldwide webcast that day.

The zany rockers are skipping the curse of the sophomore slump by naming the band’s second studio album Chickenfoot III. Fans can pre-order the album and purchase the lead single, “Big Foot,” through iTunes.
