Join Billy Corgan’s Club

The Smashing Pumpkins have officially launched their online record club with an announcement from frontman Billy Corgan promising to give away “lots of free stuff.”

The band’s first release through the record club is a demo version of the 1992 single “Drown,” which was featured on the soundtrack to the Cameron Crowe film, “Singles.”

To get your hands on the rough mix of the track, all you have to do is enter your “very valuable and precious” email at the band’s website. Joining the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club (SPRC) is free.

In a video posted on the band’s website, Corgan describes “Drown” as one of his favorite songs that he’s ever written.

“This was done on my Tascam 688 recorder – 8 tracks to cassette,” Corgan said. “I would have been the engineer, so blame me for the lack of fidelity, but in a way it’s kind of exciting because you get a sense of what the band sounded like unfiltered, playing the song live.”

The Pumpkins used the demo to make decisions about what would become the official recording of “Drown.” The demo was recorded in Chicago around the time the Pumpkins were touring in support of the band’s debut album, 1991’s Gish, and writing songs for 1993’s Siamese Dream.

In a previous video posted on the Smashing Pumpkins’ YouTube page in late August, Corgan said the band hopes to later offer the “Drown” demo for sale, re-mixed and updated to 96k 24-bit status.

Corgan assures fans that there are plenty of Pumpkins goodies to come.

“Welcome to our record club, we’ve got lots of stuff coming up. … There will be so much free stuff, I’m not even joking, so you’ll really going to want to sign up.”

The Smashing Pumpkins’ fall U.S. tour is scheduled Oct. 5-22. European dates are set Nov. 2-25.
