Ailing John Mayer Nixes Shows

John Mayer has canceled all upcoming shows and pushed back the release of his new album because he has been diagnosed with a throat condition.

The singer/songwriter broke the news to fans in a post on his Tumblr blog, writing that he has “something next to my vocal cords called a granuloma.” Mayer said that he had spent several months “monitoring and hoping to correct the condition.”  According to VoiceMedicine.com, “a granuloma is a benign non-cancerous growth that results from irritation or trauma.”

Mayer was scheduled to perform Friday at in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. He also was set to appear with Tony Bennett in Los Angeles.

“I know there were people depending on me to be there and I’m sorry that I can’t be on those stages,” Mayer wrote.

“This is a temporary setback, though I’m not sure how long or short a period of time it will be. I’ve got the best doctors in the country looking after me and I will be singing and touring again as soon as I get the all clear. Until then I’ll be spending time writing and composing more music and kicking an empty soup can around the West Village.”

Mayer’s fifth studio album, Born and Raised, was initially scheduled for release sometime this fall or winter. His blog post explains that the music recording and song selection is complete, along with some of the mixing, but that he couldn’t finish singing on several of the tracks because of the throat condition. The album is now expected to be released next year.
