Chick Corea’s 70th Birthday Party

In November Chick Corea will celebrate his 70th birthday with four weeks of concerts featuring 10 different groups and 30 musicians. The party includes Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Return To Forever, Five Peace Band and more.

The bash takes place at New York City’s Blue Note between Nov. 1-27. The jazz club hosted Corea’s 2001 three-week residency marking his 60th birthday. The sold-out run of dates was recorded and then released in 2003 as the two-CD set Rendezvous in New York.

During the four weeks of dates, each night that is booked will features two performances with one show at 8 p.m. and a second at 10:30 p.m.

The 70th birthday party begins with two unplugged nights from Return To Forever Nov. 1-2. Along with Corea, the group features Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Frank Gambale.

On Nov. 3 the pianist/keyboardist/composer will perform with his long time friend and collaborator Gary Peacock. The bassist is featured in Keith Jarrett’s “standards” trio.

John McLaughlin and the Five Peace Band (featuring Kenny Garrett, John Patitucci and Brian Blade) take over the Blue Note Nov. 4-6.

After releasing two albums together Corea and Bobby McFerrin will team up once again for three nights Nov. 8-10. The shows are expected to include some special guests.

The Harlem Quartet will preview their upcoming album, Hot House, at the Blue Note with a string of performances with Chick and Gary Burton Nov. 11-13. Hot House will be released in February.

Next up is three special nights highlighting tunes from Miles Davis performed by musicians who got their start in his bands. “From Miles,” which is scheduled Nov. 15-17, features Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette, Wallace Roney and Gary Bartz.

Corea will collaborate with a group of Flamenco and Spanish jazz artists for three nights dubbed “Chick’s Flamenco Heart.” The Nov. 18-20 shows include singer Concha Buika, three veterans of Paco de Lucia’s band (guitarist Nino Josele, bassist Carles Benavent and flautist Jorge Pardo) and drummer Jeff Ballard.

Fans will have just one night – Nov. 22 – to see Corea’s piano duet with Marcus Roberts. The jazz pianist is a longtime partner of Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
