Naked And Famous Win NZ Awards

The Naked and Famous and singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser took five awards each at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

The ceremony was Nov. 3 at Auckland’s Vector Arena. Both acts spent most of the year abroad; a tearful Fraser said she was home for two weeks “to do my laundry.”

The Naked and Famous’s tally of “Tui” awards for the night included best album and best alternative album for its debut Passive Me, Aggressive You, as well as single of the year, best group and breakthrough artist.

Fraser’s haul included best pop album and highest-selling album for Flags and international achievement.

Tiki Taane took best male solo artist, best Maori and best electronica album. He invited police officers who arrested him earlier this year for singing “Fuck Tha Police” at a club in their presence to join him onstage. Taane performed onstage with dancers dressed in cop uniforms, lent by the arresting officers.

A reunited Supergroove performed the Dragon hit “Rain” as part of a tribute to iconic NZ band Dragon (now based in Australia) that received the Legacy award.
