This isn’t the first time illness has affected Costello’s touring schedule. Citing “a very serious illness” that had stricken a “close family member,” in September Costello postponed shows in Florida, Alabama and North Carolina. But fate is a fickle concert fan and just as Costello announced the newly rescheduled dates for some missed shows, he was forced to postpone a week’s worth of Euro dates, once again citing a family member’s illness.

It turns out the ailing family member is Costello’s father. According to a message posted on ElvisCostello.com, a number of concerts scheduled for this week have been postponed “due to a grave deterioration” of his father’s health and that it is hoped the shows will be rescheduled for 2012. Postponed gigs include Stockholm (Nov. 13); Malmoe, Sweden (Nov. 14); Brussels (Nov. 17); Eindhoven, Netherlands (Nov. 18) and Reykjavik, Iceland (Nov. 21).

As to the new list of U.S. shows, Costello recently announced a revised itinerary showing him playing Melbourne, Fla., at the King Center For Performing Arts April 23; Clearwater, Fla., at Ruth Eckerd Hall April 24; Hollywood, Fla., at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino April 25; Jacksonville, Fla., at Florida Theatre April 27; and Durham, N.C., at the Performing Arts Center April 29.

If you’re waiting for Costello to announce a rescheduled stop for Orlando, you can now exhale. Although a new Orlando date at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center is not in the works, folks who purchased tickets for the event can obtain refunds at points of purchase. But not all is lost for Costello’s Orlando fans. They will have an opportunity to purchase tickets for the Melbourne show before the general onsale begins.

Costello resurrected his “Spectacular Spinning Songbook” earlier this year, taking his custom carnival attraction on the road for the first time in 25 years. Much like a carny barker’s game of chance, the Spinning Songbook includes the names of several of his hits as well as obscure favorites and rarities with fans spinning the wheel to decide which song Costello plays next.
