Earlier this month a 22-year-old University of Michigan student named Dennis Guttman started an online petition urging the Detroit Lions to choose a new halftime band for Thursday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. The petition racked up 54,958 signatures.

“This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?!” Guttman wrote in the petition, which was signed by 54,958 people.

A few weeks ago the Detroit Lions announced that despite Guttman’s efforts, the Canadian band would still be providing the entertainment at the big game.

After releasing a statement saying the group is “honored to perform,” Nickelback teamed up with Funny or Die to have a little fun with the controversy.

Look out for the guys dressed up like famous folks from Detroit like Tom Selleck and RoboCop.
