NZ Venue Copes With Elton’s Crowd

Elton John’s debut concert in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand, drew 35,000 – the biggest crowd for a concert in NZ’s southern region of Otago.

Dunedin Venues Management CEO David Davies was pleased with how the Forsyth Barr Stadium and its NZ$1.5 million (US$1.1 million) sound system coped with the crowd and strong winds.

“We had 9,000 or 10,000 people through Gate C in five minutes,” he said.

John’s NZ promoter Phil Sprey, managing director of Capital C: Concerts, told media that as a result of its success, he was negotiating to stage two international concerts next year at the venue.
