\What’s notable about Gwar’s announcement is that the band didn’t blame the canceled journey on “scheduling conflicts,” “production issues” or even the ever poplar “exhaustion” excuse.

Instead, the group didn’t mince words and was totally up front with its fans.

From Gwar publicist John Freeman of Freeman Promotions:

“The European leg of Gwar’s ‘Return of The World Maggot’ tour, scheduled to kick off in January 2012 has been canceled after several promoters pulled the plug on shows, citing poor ticket sales.”

Freeman also included a few words from Gwar spokesman David Brockie who provided a very honest assessment of the situation.

“Several of the promoters were alarmed by the low ticket sales, and they decided to start pulling the plug on shows,” Brockie said. “It got to the point where we had lost so many shows that we simply could not afford to do the tour.”

It’s not often that a band admits that poor ticket sales resulted in canceling a tour. That’s usually heard in off-the-record whispers while some poor public relations flak has to make up an excuse, like saying the drummer is “emotionally drained” or that a schedule plotted out more than a year earlier suddenly has “logistic problems.” So hats off to the Gwar press machine for honesty. Something way too rare in today’s world.
