Released in 1979, Pink Floyd’s The Wall is one of the most enduring albums in rock history. Rich in the band’s often-explored themes of isolation and abandonment, the album’s popularity has never faded, as evidenced by Waters placing fifth on Pollstar’s Top 25 Worldwide Tours for 2011 by selling 936,832 tickets for a total gross of $103.6 million.

“Thirty years ago when I wrote The Wall, I was a frightened young man,” Waters said. “In the intervening years it occurred to me that maybe the story of my fear and loss with its concomitant inevitable residue of ridicule, shame and punishment, provides an allegory for broader concerns: Nationalism, racism, sexism, religion, whatever! All these issues and ’isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life.”

Waters begins his 2012 tour with an Australian / New Zealand leg launching Jan. 27 in Perth. South America is next with Waters playing two nights in Santiago, Chile, March 2-3 followed by nine shows in Buenos Aires, two in Rio and two in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After playing two Mexico City dates in April, Waters brings The Wall back to the U.S., beginning at Houston’s Toyota Center May 1.

Although playing mostly arenas on the 2012 North American tour, the Live Nation-produced tour will hit a few stadiums along the way, including San Francisco at AT&T Park May 11; Vancouver, British Columbia, at BC Place May 26; Chicago’s Wrigley Field June 8; Toronto at Rogers Centre June 23; New York City’s Yankee Stadium July 6 and Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park July 14.
