Japan Fests Shaping Up

This year’s Fuji Rock Festival, slated for the weekend of July 27-29 in its usual location at the Naeba ski resort in Niigata, Japan, is shaping up as Glastonbury East.

In addition to the Stone Roses, which were prematurely announced as a headliner when the group leaked its participation at the Japanese event last December, Radiohead has confirmed it will be another headliner.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has played Fuji before but not with his main gig, which has performed at Fuji’s rival, Summer Sonic, in the past.

Speaking of which, SS will take place in Tokyo and Osaka the weekend of Aug. 18-19, though no artists have been announced.

SS’s organizer Creativeman Productions will hold its annual twin one-day festivals, Springroove and Punkspring, on the weekend of March 31 at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center outside of Tokyo.

Springroove’s roster so far includes David Guetta, LMFAO, Kreayshawn and Azealia Banks, while Punkspring boasts The Offspring, Sum 41, New Found Glory, Suicidal Tendencies, All Time Low and others.

Creativeman is also taking care of All Tomorrow Parties’ latest “I’ll Be Your Mirror” multimedia festival in Japan, which takes place April 14-15 at the Studio Coast complex in Tokyo.

No artists have been announced yet, but the festival is being curated by producer and former Sonic Youth member Jim O’Rourke, who has made his home in Tokyo for the past half-decade or so.

In other festival news, Australia’s Future Music Festival will carry out its first Asian event in March.

Future Music Festival Asia will be March 17 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with an impressive lineup: The Chemical Brothers, Tinie Tempah, Wombats, Grand Master Flash, and dozens of Asian and Australian acts.
