AEG Said To Reveal Plans For LA Convention Center
Anschutz Entertainment Group is expected today to unveil plans on remodeling the aging Los Angeles Convention Center.
AEG offered to remodel the building as part of its proposal to the city to build a downtown football stadium near the L.A. LIVE entertainment complex.
“I don’t want to say the current convention center is useless,” Carol Schatz, president of the Central City Association, told the Los Angeles Daily News. “But it’s pretty close to that.”
City planners, who have seen the plans, told the paper it “dramatically reshapes” the existing site. Planning Director Michael LoGrande said the site would be “airy,” “light” and “not massive.” It allegedly includes references to L.A.’s film history, as well as exterior lighting columns. There has been talk of the Oscars moving to the L.A. Live complex.
The convention center was built in 1971 and expanded in the ‘90s, but is divided into two spaces and facility executives have said the division has hindered the recruitment of larger events.
AEG declined to comment on the Daily News article.
