The protest rally will take place 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the corner of Figueroa and Pico near the Staples Center in Los Angeles where the 54th annual awards show is being held, according to GrammyWatch.org. The Grammys begin at 8 p.m.

The concert, dubbed “Not Those Awards All-Star Latin Jazz Jam,” is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mama Juana’s Latin Lounge in Los Angeles.

“We are holding this concert to remind music fans about all the great music that has been eliminated from the Grammys. To paraphrase what Frank Sinatra said at the first Grammy Awards in 1959, ‘Remember, the awards are about excellence, not popularity,’” Latin jazz artist Bobby Matos said, according to Reuters.

Matos will perform at the Jam along with a lineup that includes two-time Grammy winner Oscar Hernandez, Grammy nominees John Santos and Bobby Sanabria, Elliott Caine, Pablo Calogero and Susie Hansen.

The Grammy Awards categories were dropped from 109 to 78 last April, affecting genres including Latin jazz, Native American and Hawaiian music, zydeco, and traditional blues.

Some musicians labeled the changes racist and others filed a lawsuit claiming that the decision to consolidate the categories caused them “irreparable harm,” according to the New York Times.

Artists including Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt and Bobby Sanabria also voiced their opposition about the cuts. In late January Rev. Jesse L. Jackson announced that he wanted to meet with Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, to discuss the cuts, according to The New York Times. Jackson said he would protest the awards if the private talks didn’t pan out well.

The Academy defended the decision, which also eliminated separate awards for male and female performers, by saying the decision helped maintain “the prestige of the highest and only peer-recognized award in music,” according to Reuters.

About 23,000 signatures were gathered for a petition demanding that the Recording Academy reinstate the Grammy categories. Demonstration organizers hope that supporters will attend the demonstration and concert.
