Henley Organization Makes Right

A nonprofit organization owned by Don Henley has agreed to return a portion of a large donation after learning the funds came straight from a Florida Ponzi scheme.

The Caddo Lake Institute received a $100,000 donation from former attorney Scott Rothstein before his $1.2 billion scheme collapsed in 2009, according to the Dallas Business Journal. Rothstein is serving a 50-year prison sentence for his crimes.

Caddo President Rick Lowerre told the DBJ the environmentally focused organization wanted to help make Rothstein’s victims whole.

“We understand the law and the problem and we want to resolve it,” he said. “I certainly knew there had been this donation. We just thought he was an attorney and sent him a nice thank you letter.”

Several other groups including the March of Dimes, United Healthcare Insurance and CorpDirect Agents have also recently agreed to return funds in a settlement agreement related to the case, the paper said.
