Before And After Sugarland

A teenager partially paralyzed in last summer’s deadly Indiana State Fair stage collapse told a state Senate committee his life has changed drastically since he was injured.

Brad Humphrey, 18, addressed the committee that is considering a proposal to direct another $5 million to victims of the Aug. 13 stage collapse that occurred before a scheduled Sugarland concert.

That amount would go beyond the state’s $5 million liability cap. Those funds have already been distributed.

Humphrey told lawmakers Feb. 16 that he played tennis last year at his Indianapolis high school but now faces a lifetime of needing a wheelchair-accessible home and workplace and taking many medications.

Humphrey says he worries that the additional money won’t be enough for those whose lives are “measured as in before Sugarland and after Sugarland.”
