Already a huge hit in Europe, “Batman Live” roars into the U.S. this fall.
Playing multiple nights in major venues, at this time the “Batman Live” calendar shows five nights in Anaheim, Calif., at the Honda Center Sept. 5-9; four nights in Saint Paul., Minn., at the Xcel Energy Center Sept. 13-16; four nights in San Jose, Calif., at the HP Pavilion Sept. 20-23; and four nights at Los Angeles’ Staples Center Sept. 27-30.
But that’s just the tip of the proverbial Bat-berg. Batman Live also has multiple nights in Las Vegas (Oct. 3-7); Oklahoma City (Oct. 10-14); Rio Rancho, N.M. (Oct. 17-21); Colorado Springs (Oct. 23-24) and Loveland, Colo. (Oct. 26-28). Expect more dates to be added.
Saying Batman Live has multiple nights only hints at the popularity of this touring Caped Crusader as many dates represent two shows per day.
What is Batman Live? While talking with Pollstar last November, Batman Live Executive Producer Nick Grace described the arena spectacular as a “theatrical show” that tours as a “rock ’n’ roll show,” relying on 23 trucks to move the production from city to city, but six hours for load-in. As to the actual story, well, that should be familiar to longtime fans of The Batman.
“The story is the origin of Robin, how he starts as a circus performer with The Flying Graysons and ends up as a crime fighter with The Batman,” Grace told Pollstar.
“We have a great writer, Allan Heinberg, who has written for ‘Sex And The City’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ He has written a modern take on the origin of Robin. We also loved that idea. Robin’s background is the circus, so that gives us an opportunity in the first act to have some circus scenes. Half of our performing cast are actors and half are a circus troupe – acrobats and gymnastics.”
Grace also said the show has several “water cooler” moments that people will talk about the day after seeing the production. And, as it turned out, Grace had his own favorite water cooler moment.
“My favorite [water cooler moment], I guess, is the Batmobile,” Grace told Pollstar. “In a way the Batmobile is one of the stars of the show. There’s anticipation. When the Batmobile is about to come on stage for the first time, you can tell people are waiting for it. They love it.”
