Deadmau5 Burns Madonna
In the midst of promoting her new album and tour, Madonna dropped by to introduce Avicii’s set, one of the new big stars of electronic dance music. She totally made sure the kids knew she was hip to their jive talk.
“How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” she asked.
That’s a street name for MDMA, aka Ecstasy. Deadmau5, who smokes cigarattes but doesn’t do drugs, thought it a stereotypical slur of EDM fans.
And he said so.
“Very classy there madonna.,” he wrote. “’HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra. quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! fucking cant smack my head hard enough right now.”
He didn’t take long to post a follow-up.
“Seriously, i giveth not a fucking single FUCK for slating on madonna for reaching an entirely NEW level of idiocy … i can appriciate her meteoric career, and all good deeds done, but WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? That’s your big contribution to EDM? Thats your big message to ultra attendies? hipsterspeak for looking for drugs? fuck off you fucking IDIOT. fuck.”
The fellow EDM star backed off of his rant in a lengthy follow-up (although he did find time in between to drop a few World of Warcraft references and give his take on the popular Skyrim video game). He explained that some EDM fans take Ecstasy, but some are straight arrows and others too young or old to make those choices.
“Now, we’ve taken EDM so far in the past decade, so goddamned far. It really hurts me to see rampant ADVOCATION of extreme bullshit lifestyles to a genre that spans pretty much any age gap these days,” he said. “Of course, ill always have my opinions about this or that… and yeah, its my personal choice not to do drugs, but im not on a fucking crusade to stamp out other peoples personal choices by no means.”
Madonna has since tried to clarify the situation.
Her Twitter account displayed a Madonna photo wearing Mickey Mouse ears – similar to to the helmet/mask Deadmau5 wears on stage – with a speech bubble that reads: “From one mouse to another, I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called ‘Have You Seen Molly’ written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album.”
The Twitter accounts had a cordial bit of back and forth, ending with Deadmau5 telling the Material Girl (or whoever handles her Tweets) to “just be a little more aware of what you *should* represent at EDM events, and ill watch my mouth.”
Madonna’s new album happens to be titled MDNA, an abbreviation of her name.
