Jet Breaks Up

Australian garage rockers Jet have announced they’re breaking up.

“After many successful years of writing, recording and touring we wish to announce our discontinuation as a group,” read a statement from the band on its Facebook page. “From the many pubs, theatres, stadiums and festivals all across the world it was the fans that made our amazing story possible and we wish to thank them all. Thank you, and goodnight.”

The band had been active touring in 2009 and 2010, including as support on major Australian tours for Green Day and Powderfinger, respectively, but did not do any major performances in 2011.

The band formed in Melbourne in 2001 and had a hit in 2003 with the raucous “Are You Gonna Be My Girl.”

Before the breakup, guitarist/vocalist Nic Cester and lead guitarist Cameron Muncey left the band, forcing a hiatus, while bassist Matt Wilson and drummer Chris Cester went on to form “doom-disco” band the Damndogs.
