Yes, that Keith Moon, the hard-living original drummer for The Who. Since Moon passed away in 1978 at the age of 32, it would appear that the committee’s invitation to the legendary rocker is a tad late.

Apparently longtime Who manager Bill Curbishley took the invitation in stride. London’s Metro newspaper reports that Curbishley told the Sunday Times that it would be difficult but not entirely impossible to have the drummer play the event.

“I emailed back saying Keith now resides in Golders Green crematorium, having lived up to the Who’s anthemic line ‘I hope I die before I get old,’” Curbishley said.

“If they have a round table, some glasses and candles, we might contact him.”

In reporting that producer Stephen Daldry has promised that the Olympics closing ceremonies will feature the history of British popular music, the Metro also notes that the Sex Pistols have turned down an invitation to perform. While we don’t know what excuse the Sex Pistols might have given for declining the offer, we’ll bet the reason wasn’t half as good as Moon’s.
