Bobby Womack Beats Cancer

Bobby Womack says he’s undergone surgery for suspected colon cancer and is “cancer free.”

In late March the soul singer/songwriter’s friend, bassist Bootsy Collins, announced via a message posted on Facebook that Womack was in the first stage of colon cancer, noting that Womack was “very up beat about his future.”

Reuters reported that Womack was hospitalized earlier in March due to severe shortness of breath and that he was scheduled for “a minor heart procedure.” According to a March 26 story from the Associated Press, the singer was released from the hospital after recovering from pneumonia.

Womack has updated fans on his condition with a May 24 post on his official Facebook page.

“We’re delighted to announce that Bobby Womack has successfully undergone surgery for suspected colon cancer. A tumour was removed last night which turned out to be cancer free. We wish him all the best in his recovery from the operation. Thank you for all your kind messages and support.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s next scheduled performance is June 2 in Houston at the Arena Theatre.
