Vegas Readies For ‘UNLV Now’

The University of Nevada Las Vegas, which has been in talks for more than a year with Majestic Realty Co., is expected this week to announce “UNLV Now,” a sprawling campus center that will include a 60,000-seat stadium, 4,000 living units and a retail area.

Construction is expected to begin next year if the Nevada legislature approves a tax-incremental financing district for the project in early 2013, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

The Thomas & Mack Center would be overhauled and renovated, and the stadium would reportedly take about 30 months to complete. The stadium would be temperature controlled and therefore be a suitable host for large events Vegas could not previously attract, like major league soccer, the NCAA’s basketball Final Four, other sports events and political events, according to the Sun.

The paper originally estimated the project would cost $2 billion.
