Rushmore Expansion?

The city council of Rapid City, S.D., has voted to explore funding options to design an expansion of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The expansion could cost as much as $150 million and would include a 20,000-seat arena to replace the existing 9,400-seat facility, and two parking garages with 3,500 spots.

Mayor Sam Kooiker said the project would be put before voters. Possible funding could be the city’s sales tax-supported economic development fund.
