Cultivating Asia
The American Association of Independent Music recently took a delegation representing 15 members to Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai for the purpose of cultivating the Asian market for smaller independent record labels.
A New York Times article about the trip mentioned that major record companies have worldwide networks but independent labels do not.
The trip to Asia is expected to cost $200,000.
AAIM members will pay $32,000 and the rest is being covered by the states of Tennessee and New York and the federal Small Business Administration. The organization will also receive funds from the United States Department of Commerce for similar trips in the future.
An AAIM representative said that, at best, its members might have contacts in Europe, and that many artists in Canada and Europe receive public support to tour and attend industry events overseas.
The trip to Asia will give some of these labels, such as Daptone and Ultra, a head-start on the continent.
