In the ’70s, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs were the biggest-drawing – and loudest – Australian act. It was Thorpe who suggested to his former roadie, Michael Chugg, that they put together a tour featuring acts from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.
The tour was a runaway success: 160,000 attended 18 sold-out shows.
Ted Robinson, director of the 2012 tour, said of the hologram plans, “To my knowledge this is the first time anyone has undertaken this sort of exercise with a music icon of Billy’s stature in Australia.”
Thorpe died in 2007.
