Indiana’s Compensation Plan Fair
Indiana’s compensation plan for victims of last year’s state fair stage collapse was fair, considering its financial constraints, the man who designed the plan believes.
Kennth Feinberg, a compensation specialist who oversaw plans for 9/11 and BP oil spill victims, was brought in to help the state formulate a plan to compensate the families of the seven dead and more than 50 injured in the Aug. 13, 2011 disaster.
Indiana limits legal claims against the state to $5 million total per incident, and a charity fund raised about $1 million. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zeoller divvied up the state’s pool among victims.
“It’s one thing when you have an unlimited source of funds,” Feinberg said. “But when you have a limited fund like you had in Indiana … then seeking some sort of alternative system to allocate limited resources makes sense for everybody.”
