Jeff Chang Angers Crowd, Dodges Chairs
Police almost had a riot on their hands the night of Sept. 5 at a concert in Luoyan, Henan Province, China.
The headliner was popular Taiwanese singer
Chang’s opening act, a singer named Fish Leong, was on time, but after his performance finished the organizers sent out a group of unidentified singers and dancers to keep the audience amused every so often. However, all it did was make the crowd more anxious, according China Daily.
By 9:30 p.m., the hall was quite agitated, and people started throwing bottles on stage and chanting that they wanted their money back. Eventually, Chang showed up at 10:05 p.m., but it was too late. Several audience members started throwing chairs at him as soon as he opened his mouth. He fled.
Fortunately, the organizers and security were able to calm the crowd before matters became really ugly, but the concert was nevertheless called off. Police are now investigating the company that put on the concert and demanding they refund all the tickets that were sold.
Another organizer had to pull the plug on a different major pop concert, but did so well before anyone showed up for it.
The Korean promoter HH Company called off the Fourth Korean Music Wave event scheduled for the Incheon Munhak World Cup Stadium Sept. 15 due to budget problems, despite – or perhaps because of – the participation of top K-pop acts such as Super Junior, KARA, FT Island, 4minute, and Jang Woo-young.
HH posted an apology on the concert website saying that unexpected expenses made it impossible to stage the show. Fans of Super Junior flooded fan sites with complaints, as the concert would have been the final appearance for member Leeteuk, who is about to go into the army for his mandatory military service.
Lately, there have been many stories in the Korean media about how expensive it has become to put on K-pop concerts.
