Honolulu Club Cap Increased

Fire inspectors in Honolulu have approved a safety system and upped the capacity at a nightclub that recently had to turn ticketed patrons away at the door over fire code violations.

Concertgoers waiting in line outside The Republik for a Third Eye Blind show were sent away Aug. 30 when inspectors found the club had exceeded its 299-capacity limit by about 100 people.

Officials had capped the limit at 299 until the venue secured an assembly permit and met a number of other safety requirements.

Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada told the Honolulu Star Advertiser the venue’s capacity was increased to 1,000 people after inspectors tested the venue’s fire alarm and automatic sprinkler system.

The Republik’s owners are still working to complete a permit application with the city’s Department of Planning and Permitting over the venue’s occupancy load, the paper said.
