Santa Cruz Gets Roundball Arena
Santa Cruz, Calif., is making a home for its new NBA development league team.
The Santa Cruz Warriors, which is relocating from North Dakota, is expected to play in a in a temporary, 33,000-square-foot arena this winter, according to the Santa Cruz Sun-Sentinel. The facility, dubbed the Kaiser Permanente Arena, debuts Dec. 23 for the first home game.
Santa Cruz plans to loan the team $4.1 million and lease the facility to the team for $432,000 in pre-paid rent, according to the paper. The Warriors will have additional annual loan payments of at least $250,000 during the seven-year deal.
Total project cost is estimated at $5.4 million.
Some NIMBYs are already complaining of increased traffic, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Team leaders say the franchise wants fans to park downtown and patronize surrounding businesses.
