Producer Chen Yuli Dies
Noted Chinese music producer Chen Yuli died in a traffic accident Sept. 5 in Paris, where he grew up. He was 29.
An obituary that appeared on the China Music Radar blog explained that Chen was the son of Chinese immigrants and his father was a famous composer.
He studied classical piano and turned to music production as a teenager.
Later he moved to the U.S. and apprenticed with Jay Messina, who produced Aerosmith, KISS, Lou Reed, Patti Smith and others. Probably Chen’s biggest internationally recognized job was as the music producer for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and its theme song.
Among the Chinese artists he mixed and produced were Wang Wei, Arrows Made of Desire (for whom he also played keyboards), The Gar, Mr. Graceless and Queen Sea Big Shark.
