Google Ditches
China Music Search
Google has shut down its free music search service in China. According to various media reports, the company decided that the service did not make as much of an impression on Chinese Internet users as had been expected and Google will transfer resources to other products.
No employees will be laid off as a result.
The music service was launched in 2009 in partnership with Top100.cn to allow Chinese users to download free, high-quality music. The idea was to compete with Baidu, the biggest search engine service in China.
Subsequently, Google was at odds with Chinese authorities over its monitoring of users, and it closed its China Web search service in 2010 rather than censor search results.
Users have until Oct. 19 to export their music playlists as a downloadable file.
