More Diplomatic Casualties

The ongoing diplomatic rift between China and Japan continues to play havoc with cultural exchange.

After canceling a number of events to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, China apparently pulled the plug on the much-anticipated Japan tour by classical pianist Yundi Li.

According to Japan Arts, which organized the tour, “the Chinese government has advised that Yundi Li’s visit to Japan be suspended due to the Senkaku problem. Because he is unable to come to Japan the tour will be canceled.”

Li has a sizable fan club in Japan, and the cancellation will have a large effect on Li’s overall Asia tour, which was set to start Sept. 22.

The month-long itinerary originally included 21 performances, but 16 of them were in Japan.

The only countries where he is playing now are Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. Though already a much-admired performer in Japan, he has so far made his mark with orchestra performances.

This tour would have further established him as a solo pianist with a program of Beethoven.
