Nassau Coliseum Faces Fines
The U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited the facility operator for 16 violations of workplace health and safety standards. It says workers were exposed to asbestos. The areas were not accessible to the general public. It also found inadequately lighted exit routes and other violations.
“Nassau County, as owner of the Coliseum, is responsible for asbestos remediation, maintenance and capital improvements,” an SMG representative said. “SMG is committed to full compliance with occupational safety regulations and has always worked with the county to help make sure that the Coliseum remains safe for workers and patrons. While SMG is gratified that OSHA did not find any willful violations, we will be contesting the citation.”
The Nassau County attorney said it would work with SMG on resolving the issue.
The county is seeking proposals to replace the 40-year-old arena.
